Right on Matt. Stoked to hear that you defied the money-mangle and managed to put on those 5 years of successful competitions - good on ya for sure. Yes, having the skaters judge themselves does seem to be a bit more fair in many ways - I've competed in a few comps like that myself - the most recent being at Cholo's Bowl on North Shore, Hawaii a few years back - Rune Glifberg took 1st. My only dissatisfaction with it was;
1) Many of the skaters are distracted and preoccupied to pay real close attention to watch each & every wall, do not keep accurate record of all that went down, and end up going with a who's cool /who's not Mob-type-of-mentality in their final score submission.
2) Pre-existing bias' come into play on judging your fellow skaters - easier to give your buddy/icon a better score then those that have snubbed you in the past..

I have been thinking that there needs to be some kind of complete reconfiguration of what scores are based on and how they are bracketed... So that there is much less impetus to restrain one's art and stay on just to get through.. The Art needs to be celebrated while restraint and strategy is de emphasized..

Thanks for the story Matt, BenTen

Thanks a lot BigTim. That is indeed another Fucked Up story about what Vans has become in recent years - sorry to hear it. Thanks for the stoke in the other comments though - would be Killer to skate with you when I in the future. Yep, I get hardware from 502 happy hear that you do also. By the way, are you the same "BigTim" that I raged with at the Skatopia bash in the late '90's / early 2000's?

Thanks for the comments Steve. I most certainly was not bitter that I didn't skate in the PPP this year. Actually I've nearly boycotted the event in recent years, choosing not to take my final runs in the last one that I did enter as I was so 'turned off' by the wait-till-your-name-is-called Format.

In regards to your statement about not being asked to participate in the Combi-reconstruction-process...I will have to give that some more thought. Perhaps I do hold some resentment about their decision. However, I do not believe that - whether I DO or DO NOT - has any influence on my frustration with the new pool or the new “jam” format.
Thanks for your feedback, BenTen

Sounds like you're just bitter because you didn't get to skate the contest this year and Vans didn't ask you to design and build the combi. Quit crying, crybaby.

We used to let the skaters judge the competitions. If you entered, you got to vote, top 5 (and you couldn't vote for yourself). the skaters knew who was ripping hard that day and who was cruising. Also, no one could complain because they were a judge. Yeah you could get a conspiracy if enough people enter in order to "rig" the event, but no more than when you pay a person to judge.

hey ben,i'm an "old" fart skater from australia and i agree with all your points above.I ran a series of vert comps some years ago here when i went to "the world cup" run by globe shoes and they would not let australian skaters compete in the vert section unless they had travelled to the states AND got a sponsorship1i told the powers that be that they suck dick and i could put a vert comp on with NO budget.it worked!5 years of fun,gnarly skating and good times.anyway,i have been a judge and a commentater for many years and here's the "fairest way of judging i could come up with.Instead of having 3,4 or 5 "judges'who may or may not know whats going on in front of them,i got EVERY skater who competed to be a judge.if you went in the comp,you got a sheet of paper with 1,2,3 places for each division.at the end,i collected all the sheets,tallied up the votes and voila (reasonably)fair result.at first,the skaters were a bit dumb,but after a couple of times they worked it out!if your skating in the comp,you watch who's ripping.the skaters know who's "on' and who's just going through the motions.so,what do you reckon?

I felt the same on the final results of the Masters top five, it just didnt jive. I watched every inch of every ones runs on the webcast and man, I felt like I new nothing when I told my son what I thought was the order of the winners. I feel your frustration man, but all I can do is hope for the best for the future.
