I have been receiving quite a bit of ‘blowback’ from the California Skateboard industry, as well as some of my sponsors, in regards to my critical post on the degradation of the ProtectPoolParty. Here is my response to one of the emails that I received from a industry head who had said that by my outspoken post I risk losing my future paychecks from the industry:

Thank you for you honesty XXX. And first of all; I do not receive much of a paycheck from anybody anymore for my professional skateboarding. I have played the PC game for many a year only to be manipulated and piggy-backed off of by my contemporaries and disregarded by my big sponsors.

One example being that when my back, neck, liver & skull were broken in a car accident that resulted in a 10-day-coma, Lucero dropped me from Black Label – a team that I had been the top selling pro model for in it’s 1st couple of years. Secondly, Vans, for whom I also helped prosper by playing a role in their advertising campaign to come back up in the skateboard market, also dropped me after my car accident. I mentioned something like this in my dissemination. So really what do I have to lose by telling the truth and shining a light on the exploitation of a once beautiful event. I only felt that by being brutally honest I might gain a reputation as being a honest truth-teller and not a “disgruntled ex pro” as you put it.

I won’t bother to mention the names of my contemporaries – and who I had considered long time friends – that manipulated and copied what I had worked for years to become to bring themselves up while keeping me down. So in reality, I have only been able to support myself and my family through my skatepark design/construction efforts. I will truly contemplate and consider your advice in the next several days… But I refuse to continue to turn my head from the injustices and commercializing of skateboarding that I have given my body and life to. I Have to Be Real in order to Survive in my heart.

Thanks again. Hope to talk soon, BenTen

I have been very saddened by what I view as a degeneration of this competition in the last few years from what it once was. The beauty and energy that was present in the first few years, and which caused the event to elevate to the status that it now holds, has been greatly reduced in my eyes since the demolition and reconstruction of the true-to-original Combi. I will list here 4 of my main reasons for this.

1) The true jam format has been terminated – while they still deceptively give it the name “Jam.” Now it is a runs-in-order competition which has greatly diminished the excitement/energy/fire that was once a key-ingredient of the event. Many that I have spoken with tell me that they feel the same way.

2) The elimination of the roll-in. I would most often begin my runs by rolling in via the channel. This would allow me to start with much-needed speed which is not attainable by beginning with a taildrop. The elimination of the channel also marks a departure from the tribute/replication of the O.G. Combi and now brings the pool closer to a “X-Games Halfpipe w/ Corners” type of feel.

3) The slippery, plastic-feeling coping. It no longer has a Grind-feel to it but more of a ‘truck-slide.’ This plastic, pretenda-pool coping also inhibits my skating by causing me to hold back a bit for fear of slipping out if I am going to fast or am a little off balance.

4) The new hip, or “Duncan’s Diving board” as the TV announcers call it, is no longer nearly as skateable as the last one. This new hip is kinked, is completely round with no flat middle, and has no Vert. All of which greatly detract from this central and crucial structure in the pool.

Those are just 4 of my main frustrations with the competition, rather Media-Event, that now occurs. My discontent with Vans and the judging is another story altogether.

I rode for, and supported/promoted Vans for over 2 decades, refusing other shoe offers wanting to stay true to the my original shoe-sponsor. I won my 1st Pro comp, beating Cab in his home town even, wearing a Vans shirt. I went on to be featured in multiple Vans adds, one in the beginning of their comeback into the forefront which said: “Ben Schroeder coming up, Vans coming back.” In recent years, when Etnies contacted me asking me to ride for them I contacted Robin, new to Vans and self-proclaimed “Vans Overlord,” and told her of the offer and also of my desire to stay true to my long time sponsor. She told me that if I turned down the Etnies’ offer, she would give me a $10,000/yr travel-budget and that I would be in line for a signature shoe. I then turned Etnies down. Only a year after this I asked Robin/Jamie(TM) if my shoe-model would be happening anytime soon and also why they hadn’t contacted me – the only skatepark designer/builder on the Pro team – in regards to rebuilding the combi. At the time I had believed, and still do, that the largest deficit of that Combi was the small shallow end which need to be opened up similar to the O.G.. They had instead brought in Lance(Nike) and California Skateparks(cookie cutter king) to rebuild it while at the same time holding photo shoots with Grosso at the reconstruction with a tape measure in his hands as if he was a skatepark builder. They responded to my inquiry by kicking me off the Vans team! This after 20yrs of loyalty and support for Vans. My career was devastated.

These last facts that I just listed above were not at all addressed or even considered in my post on facebook which criticized the latest PPP Fiasco. I only tell them to you here so that you can know my recent experience with the ‘greedy’ or ‘mangled’ entity that I feel Vans has become.

What I DID address in my post, and what motivated it, was the judging which placed Lance & Mcgill over Nash & Guerrero. In addition to placing Cab over Tony Hawk which I and others feel was a bad call. Lance showed no ‘fire’ or aggression in his skating that I viewed as restrained and strategic. Mcgill fell quite a bit. I, as well as Many others, feel that Nash got robbed. This seems to be driven by a name factor which Nash lacks. Nicky also skated much better with many more tricks than either Lance or Mike. All of this seems to reflect some affinity to the image or fairytale-nature, or even marketability of the PPP for public consumption…

I truly respect many the judges (Cardiel, Kanights, etc) and do not think that they would engage in a ‘rigging’ of the event as many on facebook have claimed. I do, however, think that they might have been susceptible to an unconscious bias caused by the nature of the media frenzy etc. I also feel, and have felt for many years – as I also have been a World cup judge – that there needs to be a major revision in how to judge a skate competition. The way it is now done, and has been done for decades, does not seem to always be very viable. I have wracked my brain many times in pursuit of coming up with a completely different judging system, to no avail. That IS indeed a tough one.

I hope that all of these words do help you get a better understanding of where I was coming from in my aggressive Fb post.

Thanks,

My leg was broken 8 months ago. The tibia bone in the lower leg was completely severed in two. The accident was quite thrilling maybe I’ll tell that tale later. They put a full leg cast on for the first 10days then just a lower leg cast for weeks. After a couple months Doc told me to start putting weight on it as bones require push & pull on them to maintain sustenance. The example Doc gave was that astronauts lose a lot of bone mass floating around weightless in space. Doc said that the two pieces of the broken tibia had fused together enough at this point that there was “zero chance of them disconnecting.” I took Doc’s advice to heart and hung up my crutches on a street sign on Bourbon street, I happened to be in NOLA doing autograph-demo with Lester skating at the time, and proceeded to walk my ass(leg) off as if it was healed. I even started to “yoga-skate” on it at my local little skatepark. However, my leg did indeed feel like it was bending if I put too much weight on it while pumping transitions. It was then that I discovered that I had been carrying the majority of my body weight on my healthy leg, without realizing it. I backed off on the skating after that. So I go ahead with scheduling a little skatepark construction in Denmark to occur in April / May thinking that my leg would definitely be healed by the time spring 2012 came along. Well as spring approached my leg was still looking pretty damned mangled so I purchased a ultrasound bonehealing system for nearly a thousand dollars eager to get this suck-saga over with. A little later I go see the Doc 3 weeks before the date I scheduled to fly to Europe and he tells me that my leg ain’t healing. The two broken ends of the tibia are still 1/4” apart in what they call a “non-union.” Doc says maybe I should stop putting weight on it -the Bastard. He says that they need to cut the shit open and take a grinder and a saw to it… grind off the huge amount of bone build-up that is knobbing on the two tibia ends… Break(cut) the fibula- which wasn’t even broken in the first place- because it might be what’s holding the two ends of the other bone apart…then put in a steal rod. And then it would be another multiple months to recover all over again. Goddamn motherfucker.

In a couple days,I fly to Copenhagen on Friday the 13th. Gonna be stomping with the Vikings on this jacked up leg for just a few weeks building a concrete kidney in a little town in the middle of the forest. It’s going to be Glorious.

I’m heading over to my good friend Brian Lott’s place in just a minute so sit for a portrait he will paint. I went to his studio a few days ago also and sat for a few minutes trying to hold still in the same position. He sketched up a quick piece just to feel out the process. In about 10minutes he created a nice piece, Brian is a very talented individual. I will try post a image of the sketch on here as soon as I figure out how to post images. Brian is also very skilled on a skateboard, he is a legend of the art of skateboarding. Him and I were teammates in the Gullwing Army way back in the early 90′s.

It’s a little bit ironic that after all the resistance that I maintained street skating way back at the time that that aspect of the discipline was sprouting up, two of my closest friends here in Los Angeles are Brian Lotti & Mark Gonzales funny shit. Type at ya later blog log. B

I got a call from my good friend Randy Janson last night as he was en route from San Diego to Los Angeles. He was calling to let me know that he would be in Hollyweird for the TWS Skateboarding awards beginning at 8pm and hoped to see me there. I told Randy that I rarely get word of these kind of events unless a friend – such as him – calls me and says they’ll try to open a backdoor to somehow sneak me in. He laughed and said that he had assumed that I’d already be on the list being ‘in the loop’ and such but he would talk to peeps when he got there and try to work it out. A couple hours later I talked with Randy again and he passed the phone to Christian Fletcher who informed me that he had been assigned the role or presenting the Legend-Award to Jason Jessee and he’d go tell the office to put “Ben Schroeder” on the list. I was stoked and thanked him then hit the road for the twenty minute drive across L.a.. The venue was a couple doors up from Hollywood & Vine, which is a busy place, so I drove around a bit looking for parking. $20 to park in the lot next to the theatre, $10 down the street a bit, but a closer place said $5 so I pulled in that one. The sketchy characters came to my window and told me it was $5 for the first 30minutes then $15 for up to 3 hrs. I replied that I the place down the street was $10 and began to back out. Dude quickly called back that he’d charge $10 and waved me in. I gave them the keys to the kar after moving my laptop to the trunk and headed towards the sidewalk on Vine. But reconsidering the safety of my kar, I turned back, sized up the characters hustling the lot, and shot a pic or two of my kar and them just in case it turned up missing when I returned. As I approached the entrance to the Avalon Theater, a dude called to me from a side entrace so I walked to him and he gave me a wrist band and directed me down the corridor to some stairs into the building from the side. I entered and wandered around the place, looking at the floor a lot to avoid having to engage in the usual false-talk with strangers. I did bump into Eric Dressen and we had a quick chat halfway up a stairway. I tried to find a place to sit and see the show amongst all of the raging skaters dressed in black and studs with PBR’s in hand. Unsuccesful, I found a corner-nook on a side balcony and stood there leaning against a railing to observe. People went up, received awards, and gave quick speeches/call-outs to their crews. I had missed much of it but I did see the “Street Skater of the Year” award presented to…..Shit I can’t remember his name got to go google it. It says that award was granted to Nyjah Huston, and yes I do now recall this because the dude that came up to receive said award didn’t have dreads or look like what I thought Nyjah looked like. Anyway, some more awards where presented, each with a sick video clip shown which I really enjoyed – good cinematography and sound (Choreography?) Well put-together pieces. Brian Schaefer of S.P.O.T. was announcing and keeping the ball rolling, enthusiasm flowing. Then they called out the Legend Award to Jason Jessee and then showed some Sick clips of JJ from back in the day skating Vert at the Fallbrook ramp – a ramp that I myself spent many hours riding in my youth.. Would borrow the folk’s car and say I was going to the store or something and then Hit the freeway for the 1 1/2 hr drive do to Fallbrook in San Diego -The Hunger had dominated. And then Jason Jessee was called up onto the stage and he came reluctantly with Randy Janson and Christian Fletcher at his side coaxing him forward. It was pretty funny really because Jason really didn’t want to get on the mic to say anything and Randy & Christian keep pushing it in his face or arguing with him off-mic. Christian was all “Fuck social anxiety man, just talk!” And Randy kept trying to cover for J.J. by speaking into the mic for him but Fletcher kept pulling it away from Randy and shoving it at Jason. Hilarious stuff. Then Jason finaly grabbed the microphone and said “Thank you” and everyone in the audience burst into roaring applause. After that, my broken leg – which I’ve been trying to force to heal for Dayz damnit – started to Kill so I had to find a place to sit. I lumbered down some stairs and around drinking dudes & gals in high heels trying to find a open seat. I then ran into Jake Brown, was stoked to see and talk with him, we exchanged current digits and he pledged to send me a new box of LACED Clothing – I was Stoked . L.T.F.U. “Laced The Fuck Up” I eventually settled for a place on the floor in a front hallway with a small portion of a view of the screen – for a final movie had begun – not sure what it was but You can google it yourself if you’re interested. Security then came at me telling me that I can’t sit on the ground or something. I ignored the first goon that waived me up but eventually two more big fat fuckers came up and kept shouting me up. I told them I had a broken leg and then they started to call a medic. I said “No man, it’s been broke for a long time now, I just can’t stand on it anymore right now” and put my hand out for the fucker to help me up. I said “I need a hand.” He’s all “What, you need help? I’m calling a medic!” Anyway I finally got the fucker to help me up and I hobbled toward the lobby to meet Randy and Jason and others to head out to get some grub. Reaps Moody, old friend from when I lived in San Jose, joined me in my Kar – which was indeed still there -and we made our way through the crowded Hollywood streets down to “Swingers” restaraunt, passed Melrose, passed Fairfax, it was a ways. Got in, Got seated, Seven or eight of us. Jason had his daughter “Scout” in tow. We had some good food and hot chocolate. Shot the shit about old drunken escapades and such. JJ picked up the tab for the table and refused all the bills that we all flung at him and Scout. Made it out by 1am – ish. Shook hands and said goodbyes. Randy & Reaps had to drive 2hrs to S.D. sucks. I bumped into Jason Dill standing outside with a crew, we shot the shit, he gave me words of wisdom for my swollen member (Leg) “Ice / Elevate” etc. I then hit the road made it home by two. Good times.

Sessioned Faelledsparken for a minute on P-Body’s board because my skate was still unassembled. His board was a bit small for me as I ride a 9 1/2″ wide deck for my size 15 feet. P-Body rides a 8 1/2″ deck – which is probably wide for most these days but like I said; I’m a Big Goon. Was a fun roll for a few for sure, even on that ‘little’ board then Rew told me about the DIY pool that him and the Viking pirates had been building down the street. Nicky Guerrero, “Guru” as he’s known to the Copenhagen Skaters as he’s been the local Legend in DK for decades – was the dominant designer and motivator behind this DIY project in “Ghetto Park.” Nicky is a long-time friend of mine dating back to the mid-80′s when he was living and traveling about California so I was very stoked to go check out his concrete baby. We rode bicycles down the road to Ghetto park which was an overgrown unoccupied corner-plot. Couldn’t see any skate terrain, or anything but trees and bushes, from the street because of the overgrowth but as we made our way down the dirt trail that snaked in from the street the jewel became apparent. There was bricks, rocks and boards strewn about around the hole known as “Hullet” in CPH. Hullet means Hole in Danish. With rebar jutting up and around it’s perimeter – for the decks were not yet poured – there sat a beautifully rugged work of concrete art – a glorious symbol of the Danish Diy Domination that had begun under Guru’s guiding presence and the mighty determination of the youthful Vikings. It was in the shape of a clover with 3 diff. bowl pockets. 2 of these pockets shallow – maybe 5 feet deep and 1 being the Deep end at 10 feet. The Deep was a square with two corners but each of different radius – one about a 4 foot radiu the other about 5 or 6. So they each provide a different ‘pump’ as one raced around the racetrack that this beauty provided. The whole bowl was dynamic with every pocket and hip being unique in it’s dimensions – no two parts the same. One of the two shallow pockets was open while the other was very tight with no flat which caused it to be a bit of a ‘slingshot’ as the skater zipped into it and was flung back out with racing speed as he was confronted with navigating the sharp waterfall to the Deep end and then speed through the Deep-end corners. Hullet was indeed a sinister, challenging, but beautiful bowl…

After the session in Wonderland, and a nice walk around Christiania to have a meal at Nemoland – an outdoor café with a concert stage and many folks chilling about eating, drinking, smoking – we took a drive over to the new Concrete Skatepark at Faelledsparken about 10 minutes from “Chris” (short for Christiania) The new Skatepark was very nice with a large street area intermingled with a large flow-area, an easygoing clover pool and a killer Halfpipe run. This run snaked down and around the clover starting at 4 feet deep winding through a huge over-Vert section then culminating in a very deep bowl-end that was nearly the size of Bucky Lasek’s enormous pool. The over-Vert was also huge, rising up about 6ft above the point at which it reached Vert. It reached Vert at around 8 or 9 feet high so the top of it was 14’ 15’ above flat. I remember at one point speaking with Pontus Alv – a famous Swedish skater – who was questioning why would they ever go to so much effort to build such a behemoth section in the Skatepark as surely nobody would be able to actually reach the pool coping at its lip. We were to later see the mistake in this assumption during the demo.

So I landed in Copenhagen and was met by my friend Rew at the central train station in CPH. This station is quite a spectacle with all of the crazy sights to be seen there. By that I mean the people that hustle or linger about. Some very stylish and attractive, as one might imagine citizens of Copenhagen to be, and others drunk and disorderly. I have spent hours in this station on previous trips relishing in the foreign environment. Rew runs a skater-tent in Freetown Christiania which is a nearly lawless area in Copenhagen that is home to many artists, and bars and hashish-distribution stands but is also home to Wonderland – a Barn with a wooden bowl that thrives with skateboarding nearly 24hrs a day rain or shine. Rew scooped my up and drove me directly to Wonderland where a thriving session was of course going down. There are multiple skaters that work for Rune running errands and such..They’re “Pirates.” I had pulled a muscle in my leg just days before departing to Europe and had asked Rew where I could find some ice so that I could ice my leg in order to sk8. Rew simply sent some of the pirates off to fetch some ice.
